Root Chakra Fact File

Posted 27th March, 2026 in Chakras

The first energy centre is located at the base of the spine and the perineum. It is associated with the EARTH element and the colour RED. The Base Chakra is our foundation, a stable presence which houses our survival instinct. It is like the roots of a tree, providing stability and support so that we can grow and thrive.

The Root Chakra, also known as Muladhara which translates as Root Support, can be seen as the most important Chakra as without strong foundations, we will find it hard to flourish in life.

Feeling grounded in the Earth element, we can feel connected and secure in our physical bodies and the world around us. This Chakra forms the basis for our overall well-being.

What You Can Do to work with your Root / Base Chakra

Reconnect your body to the earth by walking barefoot on grass or on a sandy beach. Walk through a park, go hiking in the wilderness, or sit with your back against a tree to get grounded.

Why Does it Work?

Presence—being here now—is essential for health. Many of us "split" from our bodies when we were very young. Disassociation made sense when it was the only way we could survive. We want to break this pattern of leaving our bodies when we are frightened or distracted because, in reality, we can only protect ourselves if we stay.

AFFIRMATIONS FOR THE MULADHARA / ROOT CHAKRA

  • I am safe and secure, grounded and stable.
  • I have everything I need - enough money, food and home comforts.
  • I am connected to my body, and I make healthy choices.
  • I love my home. I love to keep it clean, tidy, warm and welcoming.
  • I feel loved by my family and friends - my tribe is important to me.
  • I love being outdoors and feel nourished when I’m in nature.
Because the Earth element is assigned to this Chakra, the best way to keep it in balance is to honour your connection to 'Mother Earth' and Nature. Try to take a walk outside every day and open yourself to the beauty of your surroundings.
